Curriculum Topics

ENA is working with award winning curriculum writer, Karin Hostetter,  who is versed in the National Standards and the subject matter below.  She was also the curriculum writer for the Millennium Holiday Tree project presented by Projects WILD, WET and Learning Tree.

The ENA curriculum features the below topics for both animal and human uses.  The core curriculum is directed to 4th - 8th graders.  Each core curriculum then gives teachers activities, tips and information to utilize this curriculum with K-3rd and 9th-12th students.  Each curriculum lists the National Standards that are being addressed and are linked to other local and national curriculums within the same subject matter for more ideas.

Introduction to the Educational Component of this site

Overview

Many of us wish at sometime in our lives that we could drop everything and take weeks to even years to travel across some locality “taking in” the people, history, wildlife, and scenery.  Few of us actually get the opportunity to do so.  An alternative approach is to share the experiences of someone else embarking on the adventure.  As Robert Lewis Knecht makes his journey across North America, one aspect of this web site is to provide information and activities corresponding to Mr. Knecht’s adventures that relate to school curricula.

What is Provided?

Topics are selected based on current issues of the locale through which Mr. Knecht may travel, wildlife concepts taught in school curricula, and the human dimensions of each issue.

Please click over the topic you wish to explore.

With each topic, background information is provided, followed by three related activities.  Activities are written for 4th-8th grade with suggestions for younger and older students.  In addition, activities are multi-disciplinary and correlated to national standards.  Links to other related sites are also included.

How to Use These Pages

Ways to include this website in the school curriculum are many:

  • Map Mr. Knecht’s route as he progresses.

  • Encourage further research on any of the many topics covered.

  • Perform the activities from the website to fulfill content standards.

  • Investigate other organizations, community resources, and curricula -- some through direct internet links from this site.

  • Discover new career possibilities.

  • Plan a reception if Mr. Knecht travels through your town.

  • Teach computer and internet skills.
