Activity 1:  Migration Obstacle Course

Grade Level:  5 - 7

Time:    2 hours for planning and organizing

1 hour for set up and performing

Concept:  Students run an obstacle course that simulates some limiting factors to successful migration.

Objectives:  Students will

  • name at least three limiting factors to successful migration (Science)

  • navigate some physical challenges that simulate limiting factors (Physical Education)

National Standards:

            Science

            Physical Education

Materials:  gym or outdoor field, various obstacles as decided and available but might include cones, climbing roper, ladder, ropes, etc.

Preparation Needed:

books and/or internet websites for students to do migration research

acquiring materials for obstacle course after students decide what to use

Procedure:

  • Have students do some quick research and make a list of animals that migrate.

  • Brainstorm some possible migration hazards for each species.

  • Divide students into teams of three or four.  Let each team choose an animal from the list.  The team should then select four limiting factors from the list and create a way to simulate the hazard.  Set these challenges up obstacle course style.

  • Have students run each other’s obstacle course.  Successful migrators complete the   course.  Those that cannot complete a course die along the migration route.

Some obstacle course ideas include:

  • predators - students tagging those that are migrating cars along a road - swinging bags of sand

  • fish ladder - climbing rope in gym or a ladder to climb up and down or  6 students on     hands and knees with migrating students going over one and under the next

  • tall buildings - cones to weave through or a simple maze to maneuver while blindfolded

Evaluation:

Students name five challenges to successful migration.

Extensions:

Set a time limit to complete each obstacle course.  Only those that complete under the time limit find prime reproduction, wintering, or feeding sites and survive to reproduce.

Modifications:

Older Students

  • Increase the number of obstacles

  • Increase the difficulty of the obstacles

Younger Students

  • Set up the obstacle course yourself.  Explain the concept and let the students run the course.
