Letters to God

I am excited to add a new contributor to this site!  Julia Sage holds a BA in psychology and has been working with "gifted" children for several years.

I like her message and would like to share it with you.  Julia is condensing her pieces into a soon to be published book, Letters to God.

I will be adding more of her pieces in the future.

Hi God, it's me again:

Why do people call some children retarded?  Well, they've changed the words over the years to look nicer, such as: physically or mentally disabled, emotionally disabled, severally mentally or multiply impaired, trainably or educatably impaired, pre-primary impaired, and artistically impaired.  Why do they give these names to Your perfect creations?

I used to wonder why these children were here.  Some people have told me it's because we have so much sin that it's manifested into ugliness, disease, and mental or physical impairments.  Others say it's a freak of nature.  Neither of those explanations makes sense to me.  I've spent so much time with these children and none of them are evil.  They are so full of love and so much into enjoying life.  How could that be a result of so-called sin or ugliness?

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we stopped calling these unique children retarded or the other, so called, nicer names we've given them?  Why not say, "a child with the gift of autism," or "gifted with a unique way to communicate," or "emotionally gifted," or what about, "gifted with love"?  How would that change the way we act with these children?  Would we begin to find out more about their gifts instead of trying to make them like us?  What are we afraid of?  You know God, I think people are afraid when they don't understand why things are the way they are.  Maybe they feel threatened by the things that they don’t understand and feel the need to change that which is making them uncomfortable.  Why not just learn  why something is different and rejoice in it?  Wouldn't that be easier than trying to change it?

I’ve always wondered why any of us are here.  I'd look around and see our society living day by day — life just passing us by.  Growing up, going to school, trying to get an “impressive” job, raising a family, doing as my Dad would put it, “making something of themselves.”  Then I look at these children and wonder if "making something of Yourself" is really the true purpose of life.  And if it is, why are these children here?  Some of them will never grow up to be business executives; some may never be able to have any kind of a job.  So why are they here if they can't function the way our society says they’re suppose to?  God, I know these children are perfect just the way they are.  You created them and You would never create something less than perfect.  It wouldn't make sense.  You're perfect and how can something perfect create something less than perfect unless it's flawed itself?  I know these children are a part of You, and therefore are one with You, and one with me, because I too am a part of You.  But I was still a little confused as to why You sent them to us.  I knew there had to be a reason because nothing happens by mistake.

I was also reminded of the time when I was drinking a lot back when I forgot who I was, remember?  I went to an alcohol treatment place to find out from others how to handle the drinking problem I had.  One of the girls in there told me to quit cutting myself down because "God don't make junk!"

So why did You send them to us?

You spoke to me last night in my dreams and answered my question, thank You.  You told me they were angels sent here to remind us of who we are, and to teach us the true meaning of life.  We aren't here to complicate life with wars, high technology, money, and all the other things our society gets consumed with.  We're here to experience joy and life.  Here we have perfect children to show us the true meaning of life and we're ignoring their message.  All they know is how to love and play.  They aren't concerned with finding a job; they trust their needs will be met.  They aren't interested in impressing anybody; they chose to be themselves.  They aren't concerned with whether their house is bigger than their neighbors’, what they have is enough. They aren't concerned with relationships; they are one with God.  They are showing us that none of the things we call security matter.  Loving, hugging, enjoying life and playing are what matters.  These children are so carefree.  And they know how to create their own enjoyment.  And they'd create even more if we’d let them.

So that's why You sent us these children — to show us how to live.  Thank You God, for sending us these angels, to help us remember who we are.
